Leez Priory holds a special place for me. Before I was a wedding photographer, I worked there as part of my training in the family business — which means I know this Tudor mansion and its 40 acres of Essex parkland in a way that goes beyond simply having photographed there many times. The sweeping driveway, the inner courtyard, the Great Tower, the lakes and lawns — I know where the light falls at every hour, in every season. Returning to photograph Suzie and Tom’s late August wedding felt, as it always does at Leez Priory, like coming home.

The day began in the bride’s dressing room, where Suzie’s bridesmaids were helping her get ready — and from the window, framed perfectly, was the courtyard below with the ceremony being set up in the sunshine. It’s one of those moments unique to Leez Priory: the bride watching her wedding take shape before she even steps into her dress. The anticipation in the room was tangible, and it made for some genuinely beautiful, candid photographs.

While Suzie’s preparations continued, Tom and his groomsmen were using the bridal suite to get into their tuxedos — relaxed, good-humoured, entirely unaware of quite how spectacular the ceremony setting below them was looking. I made sure to spend proper time with them and with the guests as they arrived, because those pre-ceremony photographs are so much more than filler. They capture the mood of a day as it builds, the warmth between people who have all gathered for the same reason.

After Suzie’s final bridal portraits, she walked out into the courtyard and the ceremony began in front of Leez Priory’s iconic Great Tower. The details Suzie and Tom had chosen were exceptional: white blossom trees framing the aisle, a white carpet underfoot, and all of it set against the warm red brick of the tower in full August sunshine. It was one of those setups that barely needs a photographer — and yet rewarded every frame.

Knowing Leez Priory as well as I do means I can plan my camera positioning with real precision. During the ceremony I run a second remote camera — one positioned close to capture the detail and emotion at the front of the aisle, while I work further back to hold the wider shot: Suzie and Tom beneath the floral archway, blossom trees overhead, the tower rising behind them, guests filling the courtyard on either side. It’s a photograph that tells the whole story of a Leez Priory outdoor ceremony in a single frame, and having the remote camera means I never have to choose between it and the close work. Both come home.

Straight after the ceremony I stood back. The greetings and congratulations that flow between a newly married couple and their guests are some of the most genuinely emotional moments of the whole day, and they deserve to be photographed without interference — stolen glances, tight embraces, tears that nobody planned.

While drinks and canapés were enjoyed in the sunshine, I moved quietly through the guests and let the afternoon tell its own story. Only once everyone had settled did I gather the families for group photos, working through them as efficiently and cheerfully as I could. They’re essential photographs — the ones couples return to most often as the years pass — but nobody wants to spend their afternoon doing them, and at a venue I know as well as Leez Priory, I can move through them quickly and get everyone back to their drinks.

Then came my favourite part of any wedding day: taking the couple off around the grounds. At Leez Priory this is always something special. The manicured lawns, the lakes, the old garden walls and beautiful ponds — in late August sunshine, every corner of the estate earns its place in the photographs. But beyond the images themselves, I’ve always felt that the time a couple spends away from their guests mid-afternoon is genuinely valuable. The day moves fast and the quiet walk — just the two of them, with me a gentle presence nearby — gives them a moment to breathe, to look at each other, to be a married couple before the evening begins.

I don’t believe in heavily posed wedding photography. A small prompt here, a suggestion there — but the best photographs always come from people who feel at ease, not people who are performing. I like to think that comes across in the work, and surroundings as beautiful as Leez Priory make that approach very easy to sustain. When the venue is doing that much of the heavy lifting, the job is simply to be ready.

We finished the grounds portraits in good time before dinner, and as the evening settled in I stayed close, ready for the shift in light that late summer evenings at Leez Priory always deliver. Before the first dance I took Suzie and Tom back out into the evening sunshine for a final set of portraits — the low warm light doing things that midday sun simply can’t. Then the courtyard lawn was theirs for their first dance, open sky above them, the priory glowing all around.

The evening ended with sparklers — always a favourite — and then some of the images I’m most proud of from the whole day: off-camera flash portraits with the floodlit priory rising behind Suzie and Tom in the dark. It’s a combination that creates something genuinely dramatic; the kind of photograph that looks like it took an hour to set up and actually comes together in minutes when you know the building and know your lighting. Another reason, I suppose, why knowing Leez Priory as well as I do makes such a difference.
