Chloe & Charlie — Stunning Unforgettable Wedding Photography at Leez Priory, Essex

Leez Priory · Little Leighs, Essex · July · Outdoor Courtyard Ceremony · Carriageway First Dance · Dramatic Evening Sky Portraits

Leez Priory is more than a venue to me. It’s where my story began.

I’ve written before about my connection to Leez Priory — how I worked here in the early days of the family photography business, how I came to know every room, every corridor, every corner of the grounds across the seasons. What I haven’t mentioned is that Leez Priory is also where I met my wife. So when I say this place feels like home, I mean it in the most literal sense. Photographing Chloe and Charlie’s July wedding here wasn’t just another day at a favourite venue. It was a reminder of everything this extraordinary place has given me.

July at Leez Priory can deliver some of the finest skies of the year, and this day didn’t disappoint. Deep blue, dotted with large fluffy clouds that caught the light and moved slowly across the grounds — the kind of sky that makes every outdoor photograph look like it was planned in advance. Paired with Chloe’s colour scheme of classic red roses and scarlet bridesmaids dresses, and Charlie and his groomsmen sharp in black tie with red rose buttonhole flowers, the visual impact of the day was striking from the very first frame.

The morning followed my usual pattern at Leez Priory, and knowing the venue as intimately as I do means every part of it runs with real confidence. Charlie and his groomsmen prepared in the bridal suite — one of the most impressive rooms of any wedding venue in Essex — while Chloe and her bridesmaids got ready in the changing room. I moved between both, capturing the preparations, the quiet moments of anticipation, the venue being dressed for the day, and the first guests beginning to arrive and fill the grounds with noise and colour.

Chloe’s bridal portraits were taken in the Light Oak Room — a beautiful space that I know well and always use to great effect before the ceremony. Then it was time. Chloe walked down the aisle in the courtyard, out into the sunshine and the waiting ceremony in front of Leez Priory’s iconic Great Tower. Red roses against the warm Tudor brickwork, scarlet dresses beneath a blue July sky — it was genuinely spectacular.

After the ceremony the whole party moved to the front of the venue for confetti, and then I did what I always do: stepped back and let Chloe and Charlie be with their guests. The congratulations and embraces of those first minutes as a married couple are among the most authentic photographs of the day — real emotion, unguarded and unrepeatable. I worked quietly through the guests, candid camera, letting the afternoon unfold naturally before gathering everyone for the family group photos. Efficient, cheerful, and done. Then we were off.

The walk around the Leez Priory grounds is something I’ve refined over many years and many weddings here. I have a pre-arranged route that takes us through all of my favourite spots — indoors and out, framed and open, intimate and grand — covering the full range of what this remarkable venue offers without ever feeling like a forced march between locations. Couples almost always tell me afterwards that the time they spent walking the grounds was one of the calmest, happiest parts of their day. Away from guests, just the two of them, with me nearby keeping things relaxed and natural. No heavy posing, no stiff direction — just gentle prompts and a camera ready for whatever happens. That ease always shows in the photographs.

After the wedding breakfast, I took Chloe and Charlie back outside — and by then the evening sun had transformed the sky entirely. Lower, warmer, dramatically backlit. This is where the off-camera flash work earns its place. Without remote lighting, you face an impossible choice: expose for the couple and lose the sky, or expose for the sky and silhouette the couple. With the flash balanced carefully against the ambient light, you get both — Chloe and Charlie sharp and beautifully lit in the foreground, and the full drama of that July sky stretching out behind them. It’s a technique I’ve used many times at Leez Priory, and the floodlit building after dark takes it even further.

The first dance took place in Leez Priory’s magnificent Carriageway — one of the most atmospheric spaces in the venue — and I finished my photography as the party found its feet, leaving the guests to enjoy the rest of their evening.

If you’re planning a wedding at Leez Priory, I’d genuinely encourage you to get in touch. My knowledge of this venue runs deeper than most — professionally and personally — and that makes a real, tangible difference to the photographs I bring home from every wedding here.

Chloe and Charlie — a beautiful July day at the most meaningful venue I know. Thank you for having me there.
